I've ordered a metate, some wood ash, and a pound of olotillo corn. I cannot wait to try making tortillas myself.

After my first try: couldn't get the masa quite fine enough in a food processor; ran it a long time, scraped bowl, added water, ran it some more, etc. Still felt plenty of gritty particles. Maybe 45 minutes simmering the kernels not quite long enough, still just a bit firm at the very center, but skins loosened on schedule.

Tortillas pressed out a bit shaggy-edged, and no puff, but they folded well . . . AND THE FLAVOR. OMG. I'm never going back. Looking forward to refining my technique. Might eventually try the Masienda hand grinder. You guys have changed my life again!

I think I will try this this weekend! I purchased a kitchen aid meat grinder for this that is still in the box.

Is getting it to puff just not possible with the food processor?

My homemade masa sometimes sticks to the plastic and then tears up. Does that mean it is too wet or too dry?

How world you do it without adding masa harina?
