Are you guys ready to get deep into the nitty gritty of operatic technique? I sure hope so! I may come across as overly detailed in my commentary during some parts of this video, but this is merely to point out the minor differences between a singer like Dimash, who has mastered many styles of singing, and a singer who has dedicated all their training to opera. Also to point out the difference in expectations between an operatic tenor in their prime, and Placido, one of the greatest operatic tenors in history who has simply passed his prime as a singer. In this video, I hold Placido and Dimash to a high standard because they’re performing traditional operatic repertoire, but I continually acknowledge the conditions: Last-minute preparation, Placido being in his 80s, Dimash not strictly being an opera singer, and all the rest. You all surely know by now that I believe Dimash to be one of the greatest singers alive. I have so much admiration for both of them, so try to view this more as a music lesson than anything else — that’s always how I intend my videos to be received. Much love to these singers and to all of you for the support!

Knowing what a perfectionist Dimash is, his "soons" often last almost a year, singing with Domingo completely unprepared must have been a big challenge for him. He hadn't sung arias since he graduated from college at nineteen, and he might never have sung this duet, but how could he say no to a dream come true. And so, despite all the obstacles they had to overcome, they did wonderfully. Thank you for the competent analysis, Peter❤😊

OMG Peter, you are so brave to tackle this performance. Thank you for your honest critique. This performance did have a minimum amount of time for rehearsal, but was a rare chance for one of Dimash's childhood dreams to come true. Despite each of their limitations, we Dears still loved hearing these two icons perform together.

One day of rehearsal, I consider this a beautiful performance and I tend to consider myself an opera snob. I shared this with my mother, who isn’t a fan of Dimash’s high range, she would prefer him to stay in this range, and she’s definitely an opera snob, having been offered a full scholarship to Juilliard . She said that this was beautiful, which absolutely stunned me, of course I agree. Considering this entire situation occurred because Maestro Domingo had invited Dimash to participate and he wanted to sing with Dimash, to me this is the greatest compliment.

Peter, these are not judges of professional opera, this is the judging panel of the Virtuosos Talent Show, and Dimash and Placido are part of that panel. This performance was just icing on the cake of a wonderful talent show of YOUNG classical musicians.

Thank you Peter for your nitpicking. You don’t lower your standards and we respect you for that. Granted that this was not a perfect opera performance one has to understand that both men went in knowing this fact. One day is not enough for preparation. However this opportunity of Dimash singing with one of his idols was grabbed and they informally performed in a friendly environment just for the moment in History. Later this was shared with Dimash’s Dears who quickly brought this piece to 1 million views. We just loved it and admired the bravery and the collaboration. The sound was great to us and as usually we don’t really care about the language Dimash sings in.

Hi Peter, I grew up listening to Opera, and your points are all valid. Dimash is not an Opera singer, and Maestro Domingo is very much past his prime.
But this is a Moment which transcends the wonky pronunciation and forgetting the words. This is mutual respect and acknowledgment of each other. And because of that, I love this. This was my mother’s favorite piece, and I’ve heard it performed correctly and beautifully, but I love the energy of these two men ❤

Peter, I appreciate your kindness toward both men, in your initial comment. You are extremely talented, and are a very learned person. I think you may have belabored the point, and I think even you were uncomfortable. While I understand your love of Opera, and the technical knowledge, but these were 2 men who greatly admire each other, and it was truly an honor for both of them. I think I would have enjoyed your critique more, without all the repetitive emphasis on their imperfect vowels, pronunciation, and breathing. This is all said, with all due respect to your vast knowledge. Both of these men have given their lives to music, and to the betterment of those around them. Both are Masters in their own right, and are worthy of respect and admiration.

My ignorance serves me well in this case because all I hear is beauty.

This was a dream come true for Dimash. He shared that, at the age of 5, he had a VHC of a concert of Maestro Domingo and dreamed of meeting and working with him. I am sure that Dimash appreciated the opportunity to be a judge in the Virtuoso program at the invitation of Maestro Domingo. The Virtuoso program supports young classical artists. We will be here to support Dimash as he reaches for all his dreams.

@3:35- before he became world-famous, the Kazakh Astana Opera guaranteed Dimash a position. He turned it down to pursue what he refers to as neo-classical music. Based on interviews he did not want to be limited by the strict bounds of opera; instead he chose a direction where he can explore the limits of his capabilities and creativity. I am glad he did, because now everyone can enjoy Dimash’s once in a lifetime gargantuan talent.

He was sick around 2 weeks prior and still coughing at the time of the recording. His college coach teaches all his students the Strelnikova Breathing system. So that's how he solved the problem of the persistent cough.

Dimash was classically trained from age 5. He has a masters degree in music. He turned down a position at the local opera house and he turned them down to sing what he calls neo- classical music. Placido knows that he’s pass his prime. He met Dimash at the Virtuosos competition, both were judges. Placido was introduced to Dimash’s music by his 18 year old grandson. When he met Dimash he was very excited and he was the one who suggested a duet between them. Dimash was happy because Placido was one of is idols. This is a dream come true to Dimash. It was not expected. Dimash still has a vocal coach and he practices 3 hours a day when he can. Placido is 82 years old and Dimash is going to be 30 in May.Dimash has be flying a lot between Europe and Asia going to different functions he’s been invited to. I don’t think Dimash cares how efficient Placido is. I’m sure he’s happy to be able to sing with Placido. One of Dimash’s favorite songs is in French, “S.O.S.”

Placido is director and conductor of the "Virtuosos" program in Budapest, and Dimash was invited by him to be part of the jury that encourages children and young artists. Those you saw are judges on this program, just like Dimash. And, yes, Dimash was recovering from the flu, in the video of their meeting Dimash was coughing and as Placido spoke he respectfully walked away.
The meeting between them was hilarious, Placido was so excited about Dimash that he didn't give him time to speak and immediately invited him to do this duet.
What matters to us is not the technique and correctness of the words in French but the meeting of two giants, two souls in love with music and the feeling that unites them. For us it was a great and wonderful event. and with all respect and admiration for Mr. Placido a living legend of opera.

Yes he had a day to learn it. This is not unusual for Dimash. When arrived in Arminia for his concert, he was asked to sing an Armenian folk song. He said he'd try. He had one day. He sang a most beautiful arminion song beautifully - not only learning the song but to learn how to pronounce it, he had never sung in arminion b4. A remarkable young man!!!
No deffinately - he had never spoken arminion, nor sung anything. As I said, the arminion dears asked him prob in the meeting he does with Dears attending the concert. Sorry this last paragraph is in reply to comment made below my original comment. Just tght I'd clarify that.

Dimash and Placido are also judges in this competition show. This is a performance they did for the other judges (and of course for the show). At the end you'll see two empty seats at the judges table, that's where Dimash and Placido would be sitting.

Hi, Peter!
I ignore the Dimash's pronunciation because I recognize the enormous differences between his native language and French (previously he has only sung SOS in that language), in addition to the minimal time they had to prepare this presentation. Domingo was in his "comfort zone", Dimash was not, and yet he did it musically excellent!
Si, in my opinion, Dimash remains the best singer and performer of our time!
