Thanks for the tutorial! Would be cool to show samples clips with and without compression.

I like the sound where you still have very low end and brilliant highs, but balanced. Like the sound of new strings. They sound so metallic. I call it a wirey sound.

I came for the info on bass compressors but stayed for the shirt. ;)

I'm gonna put my two cents in here. As someone who has known what compression does to the signal for a while, but never noticed a meaningful difference (since my version of a compressor was just... playing evenly when it was called for, dynamically when I could). The idea of a compressor only "peaked" (yes, thank you, piqued... intentional) my interest once I realized that some of the more rock/pop country guitarists used one to achieve that "splatty" tone of the chicken picking variety. I always liked that sound, so I got a cheap compressor. If I can give you one piece of advice here, pay for a Dynacomp, Keeley, or Ego. Something good. You'll have more control, and best of all, you'll actually be able to hear what it's doing to the signal.

Always on, JHS Whitey Tighty! It is compressor pedal simplicity, with the all important BLEND control!

Informative video. It would be super helpful to hear how compression works in practice, hearing the same lines played before and after applying different types of compression.

Compression is used on almost everything in a mix, and usually on the master buss as well to glue everything together. My optimal bass recording setup is to take the (pre-effects) DI, low pass it @ 160Hz, heavily compress it, mix it with the (post effects) amp mic that's been low cut @ 160Hz with moderate compression, then run that mix through yet another stage of light compression.

After I started playing bass in the 90s, I built myself a pretty sick Gallien-Krueger rack mount amp kit. Included was an Alesis 3630 (overrated, but effective). I was sold on compression as essentially a way to SAVE your amp/speakers from destruction. I was trained as a classical and jazz musician, but I also played funk, punk rock, and metal. I ended up getting rid of the rig because I grew incredibly sour with GK after their customer service/repair service basically screwed me out of almost $1000 (that was crazy, reply if you want the full story). BUT, I also had to have one of my Ampeg SVT head's circuits resoldered because I used to play so hard, and probably because I didn't have the rig properly compressed.

This is one thing that's confusing me as a 40 year old man: what happened to all the rack compressors? Not only was compression taken care of, but they also included noise gates and dual channels for multi layered compression (studio use only). You'd just connect it to effects loop, and boom, everything is taken care of. And IT WAS ONLY $90!! Everything is an f'ing $200 pedal these days, and you have to buy a separate noise gate, and more pedals if you want studio layered compression. Can someone please explain this to me? Bring back the Rack Mount!

I'm using the Seymour Duncan Studio Bass compressor pedal. Toggle switch set to the center, attack and compression knobs at 12 o'clock, blend at 1 o'clock and level at almost 3 o'clock.

My wife got me a Donner compressor for xmas today. Can't wait to play with it. Not really sure how it works, so thanks for the tips.

I had an extra Barber Tone Press, having the “blend” control works great, I might get a more “bass” compressor, but there’s a lot of “guitar” pedals that have enough frequency headroom to work with bass without issues, though any pedal that lets you mix/blend in the original signal is better.

Never had a pedal, but my last rig (Trace Elliot) had twin compressors. It was sweet

I use an mxr dyna comp for my bass, and it's my most important pedal now. I did use a boss cs3, which was fine, I tried an mxr bass compressor but couldn't get on with it at all, honestly didn't seem to change anything. So went back to the dyna comp

Why didn’t you show the samples with and without compression? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I play with an EHX tone corset at the front of my chain. Don’t see too many people talking about it but it works great for bass!

I have the Seymour Duncan studio bass. Affordable and delivers the goods.

The guy that repairs & modifies Alex Webster's basses told me that in his opinion that the Seymour Duncan Studio Bass compressor is hands down his #1 compressor. I've never tried one myself but I'd like to.

I use the builtin compressor "thrust" from the tc Electronics BQ500. Because you can't do anything wrong when you are unexperienced in configuring a compressor. It has only one poti :)

Very good video 👌🏿👌🏿👊🏿

I use a tc electronic Spectradrive High Quality Bass Preamp and Drive Pedal that has a nice compressor on it.
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
