Why It's Hard To Understand Americans

Maybe it's just me but French people speak french way Faster than Americans speaking english.

It's funny that so many non native English speakers say Americans talk with potatoes in their mouth or "sound stupid" for not enunciating.

It's amusing because if one of us spoke slower and started articulating every syllable other people would perceive them to be stupid because it would sound and look like they were concentrating on their speech.

Some people with stutters or other speech impediments sometimes go through this. They'll work on getting rid of their impediment by enunciating better, which helps, but then they have to get rid of the hard enunciation before sounding "normal".

Try learning Spanish then go to a Spanish peaking place and you'll see how fast people really talk.

Don't forget a huge amount of vocabulary, that helps you, but from my view, in terms of phonetics, listening is the most important. There are some sounds that we don't even have in our own Language.
