The fact that shockwaves are waves, and can go around things like buildings, make them extra terrifying. Hiding behind a building will not save you from a shock wave, and parts of your body, including your face, can be ripped off.

It seems reasonable the MSD could only be determined if you knew ahead of time the nuts and bolts of the explosives you were up against. But, I’m sure it’s better than nothing.

I heard they discovered the danger of shockwaves from instances where 1 soldier would set off a mine and other soldiers would be killed with no visible injuries. The blast wave would collapse the lungs.
