Ah yes... just plant a flag and you've become a colonizer.

If your kerbal can return to kerbin, that's a successful return mission.
If your kerbal can't return, that's a colony.
If you have no kerbal at the end of the mission, that's a probe.
If your probe is destroyed, that means it's a temporary probe.

Success is guaranteed, but the type of success is up to you.

This design reminds me of my Colony Bus I landed on Minmus.
Same cylinder design, but with a lot of wheels and a lot of RCS, most of said RCS on the bottom, no atmosphere meant substituting chutes for them.
Dropped it from booster in a sub-orbital maneuver, then sat on my RCS for 4 minutes straight, it was magnificent.
Used that bad boy to rove around the ice flats for awhile, ended up connecting 3 other buses and a drill unit to it, most successful colony and outer system launching point I ever made.

Just saw a great article today of a proposal for thin film nuclear isotope rockets, which will allow for deep space missions of 100km/sec, with continuous thrust and thrust vector vectoring for YEARS on end. Cool stuff!
