Pacemaker long-term health

When I was 36 I was told I needed to have a pacemaker implanted. It's been over a year since my surgery. In this video I talk about my discussion with the cardiologist about the long-term health effects of having a pacemaker.

If you have any topics you would like to see please write them in the comments.

Thanks for your input. I am 71 and just got a pacemaker less than a month ago. Still waiting on my first cardiologist visit. So far no issues other than incision healing. I had a rapid heart beat of 185 and was extremely short of breath. Meds would not slow the rate, and shocking the heart back to normal was not a option due to a blood clot. Pacemaker I was told was the only option. I hope they were right! Now have a steady rate of about 90bpm. We'll see what the future brings. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks for posting! I was just told today that I’ll need a pacemaker and as I’m sure you know there’s a million
questions going thru my head. Your Vlog has been most helpful.

I got my first pacemaker when I was seven. I’m 40 now. I have total AV heart lock and am 100% dependent. I’m on my fifth device and I have a floating lead and an original lead, which apparently is rare. I had an experience with pacemaker syndrome once which was scary, but it was just a matter of adjusting a setting. I’m kind of in uncharted territory, but so far so good! I live a completely normal life.

Just found your videos about your pacemaker experiences and they’ve helped to calm me down a little. I am 7 weeks post surgery and the anxiety is kicking in. I think reality has set in and the fact that this is for life. Trying to focus on the positives, and not my fear that the pacemaker is going to fail. Big life change.

My cardiologist & electrophysiologist recommend CRT-p for a third degree block or left bundle branch block. I was put on two different beta blockers for 10 months but remained at reduced EF 40-45%. Finally wore a Zio monitor which saw three episodes of pauses. Like you, however, I didn't ever feel nauseous or faint. My blood pressures have always been on higher end. Am now reading lots on how beta blockers can cause the heartbeat pauses. Electrologist said he wouldn't even consider pacemaker in my case, if I didn't have the pauses. I'm going to ask for another Zio monitor to see if after being off the beta blockers for over 4 months, will the pauses have gone away. I know people live many years after implant but it is still a huge adjustment!

Thank You for your videos, (I hope that you are doing fine?) Very helpful! Getting a pacemaker in a few weeks, and 'been doing some heavy research - I'm a bit older than you. As I am told, the issue isn't structural, but relates to an "electrical issue" - anyway, thx again for taking the time.. take care.

The leads go thru a vein in the chest- 2 of them down one vein, it would seem to be a partial "blockage" there.

The lead thru the valve does cause some regurgitation, I noticed it with the updated echocardiogram where before it said the tricuspid valve was normal, then suddenly it mentioned a reguritation in the followup after surgery.

I understand the leads CAN break over time, it would be metal fatigue, any time you flex metal it causes metal fatigue over time, that is what has brought down jet planes! Since the lead, which is wire goes inside the heart and the heart is constantly moving, that metal wire is constantly moving too, I wouldnt want to be 20 years old with a pacemaker whose leads are in there for potentially up to 60 years, they won't last that long. They replace the pacemaker not the leads, which are as I understand it- difficult to remove because tissue has grown around them, so if one breaks, I understand they typically abandon it, cap it off and run another one in.

I went in for a mitral repair in Oct, they did a Cox MAZE procedure to address the Afib I had in Feb that was controlled by meds with no futher instances, I woke up in recovery and the nurse said the box next to me was all that was keeping me alive and that I was scheduled for a pacemaker in the morning! that was totally unexpected and I still dont have a definitive answer on WHY the high success rate MAZE procedure apparently failed and now I have to deal with a pacemaker that feels wierd under the skin, a transmitter in the bedroom I'm told I'll be using for life, daily Metoprolol I thought I would no longer need after the repair that I'm told I will take for life, constant/frequent "rechecks" on the unit at a cardiologist whose last bill was $750- which will cost money out of pocket despite insurance ($2500 deductable) and then the unknown almost certainly high cost of replacing the unit in 10 years when I wont have the great insurance at work that I do NOW because I'll be retired and with some unknown Medicaid coverage that might not even cover half the costs

Hey there, I had my pacemaker fitted 2 days ago. I’m 42 and living in Scotland. May I ask, did you feel a little freaked out once got home? I am extremely anxious and seem to notice every little sensation. I get an odd fluttery almost pokey feeling of pressure in my oesophagus sporadically throughout the day...did you feel anything like that? Thanks so much for making these videos they have helped me a lot.
