Oha! Die Erklärung zum Unterschied zwischen “gefallen” und “mögen” macht total Sinn. Ich glaube, dass ich es endlich verstehe!

As a native portuguese speaker I used the verb "agradar" that in english means "to please" as a cognate to "gefallen" and the translations started to make way more sense 😄. Letting this comment here in case it helps anybody else.
