The loss of language is so true. Both my grandparents (one from Illinois and one from Colorado) were both born in 1920 in extremely rural areas—we’re talking population 100, maybe. Both went to schoolhouses with children of all ages. They both could read and write beautifully. My grandmother and her sister even wrote songs and poetry, and had short stories published. I inherited some of my grandparents books (and their parents’ books) and it’s things like Ben Hur, Pilgrim’s Progress, Robinson Crusoe, dictionaries from the 1800s. These simple country people were more educated than we are today, and they had common sense. They were too busy working the farm, raising families and fighting wars to dream up 80, 000 genders on tiktok. Those were the days.
