LEFKADA GREECE | The Castle Ruins of Agia Mavra

On the northeastern tip of Lefkada Island -- just outside Lefkada Town -- are ruins of a fortress that dates back to 1300 CE. It's one of the first things you see driving onto the island.

In its heyday it was a strong fortification, built to protect the island from pirates and other enemies. Now, even in ruin, it's an imposing structure where you can still see evidence of the many cultures that contributed to it.
