You can really see how the sausage was made so to speak with Catacombs. So many cut corners. No battleplan cards, no beasts, the back cover of the book being the background generator for the elves instead of actually being the back with a synopsis and everything, the dice being the same ones from the first starter, the back of the map being the same as the first starter, only getting one measuring stick, the box itself being way more flimsy ... the list goes on.

It's really annoying, I love Warcry as a game but GW are making it really difficult to get people to play it between a shoddy new starter and rules split between soon to be as many as 8 books once the grand alliance ones come out.

Totally agree with your review.
This boxset falls short of a starter set (no cards, no beasts, not enough outdoor terrain) and well short of an expansion for existing players (only one board design, very limited campaigns for existing warbands).

Also the Catacombs book has a weird printing with the back cover which baffles me.

I hope to see a proper underground/indoors expansions with more rules, boards and terrain.

New to the game got the box, Worth it imo if your looking to get into it. Especially if you like the war-bands in the box like I do.

thanks for the review. I missed the first box, so was really looking forward to this. Super bummed about the price point, and that the terrain is split (I wish it had more outdoor terrain). At the end of the day I will still get it because I love both warbands, and I don't have the rulebook yet, so still worth it for me (but I will do it grumbling, not that that matters to GW :P)

I would have picked up the original warcry but I wasn't back into warhammer when it was released. Catacombs I love the idea and love the dark elves but not for that price. Way too expensive for a lot less stuff. Just going to get the dark elf war band when its separate and then paint them for the sake of painting.

Thanks for the review - confirms my initial impressions. Glad I grabbed the first box so don’t have this as my only entry option.

I suspect the reason the core rulebook was never updated with errata and FAQ is because they just dumped all their overstock of the original rulebook into this set. Updating it would mean having to do a new print run. It was another cheapo cost cutting measure that makes this box look like a really half assed attempt.

As someone who owns the original starter and 2 extra terrain sets, this box does nothing for me. Half the terrain in the box is repeat stuff i already have and dont' want, it's got a rulebook that I already own and don't want. There are no cards (lol), there's no NPC's, there's a bit of scatter for the dungoen and all this for 50-60 dollars more than before.

Who is this really for? Existing players? no. New players? sort of? It's really uninspired and at a joke of a price hike.

it should have been Catacombs ONLY in the box at a lower asking price and just make it an expansion.

Thanks for the detailed and honest review! Even with the value being down graded, I was still convinced to jump on the war cry train. Looks like ill be busy painting and putting together models over the holidays.

Really weird set. Overpriced and not enough Catacombs specific rules/campaign/terrain. They should have really gone all-in with the Catacombs/dungeon terrain. Since I already have the original set, I don't need the non-Catacombs terrain or rulebook.

I was planning to get this as my first set, the lack of cards and aids for this price makes me feel hesitant. Looking at the dungeon board, since it has squares could you play without measuring distances?

Do the minis and dungeon props come pre painted or do u have to paint them this game seems cool?

Do not play warcry but watched your skirmish run down so was interested in your thoughts. Does seem to be at a weird mix right. GW does not have the old starter as that seems to how they doing things with their box games so could not put out a 140 dollar expansion as only people already into the game would get it. Adding the stuff to sort of make it a starter also made the price quite high. Frostgrave had underground stuff for a while but no terrain really. I will have to check with Matt over at Mantic if vanguard has something like this planned which could leverage the upcoming league of infamy and dungeon saga origins tiles and terrain crate to make a vanguard mode underground.

Do you still feel meh re this starter set? I just have the original starter set and wonder if catacombs is worth it for the 2 factions and revised gameplay. It’s going for $175 - 2 factions and terrain would cost about the same.

Have never played Warcry, just enjoy your thoughts

Weird combo. ½ new ½ old and not all the old stuff needed for a new player.
I'd buy the new part if sold seperatly.
