As a PC builder, I agree: you won’t build a better NEW PC for $500-600.

Base MacMini is a fantastic deal, but if you start doing any of those RIDICULOUSLY priced upgrades, then you end up overspending 😅

If you end up upgrading your Mac to almost $2k… than a PC will easily outperform: in that price range you will get 64GB of superfast RAM, a great processor, PCIE 5.0 and top notch 2TB hard drive, Wi-Fi 7… and a beast GPU like RTX4070 Super by NVidia.

Still, base MacMini is a sexy little machine… that won’t hog 500W of power 😆 Lets appreciate that 😎

Apple has never been about power. It’s always been about the experience. That’s what PC only users don’t understand about Macs until they actually use one.

Usually I buy my Macs when they are on sale and have been thoroughly reviewed. Not this time. On Friday I went to the Apple Store in Corte Madera, CA at the mall an hour before they opened and waited. I can finally say, I was the first one to buy a Mac when it was introduced! I had a blast. I got the base Mac mini m4.

I purchased an M1 Mac mini in 2020 when they first came out (my old 2012 Mini was dying) and I was completely blown away. To this day, I am still more than satisfied with its speed and performance. I use a lot of creative software... Clip Studio, Affinity, Pixelmator, etc... (I dumped Adobe, but I'm sure if I still had it, it would work fine) and even FCPX for editing. Everything STILL runs smooth as glass.
But the more I'm hearing about this new little M4 Mini... I'm so tempted... I don't NEED to upgrade yet, but man... It's so tempting. Maybe a little later in 2025.

Microsoft is scared s-less. This is no joke at MS according to one of my friends. The Qualcomm ARM chip was Windows trying to get to the same place as the M4. ARM just pulled Qualcomm's design license so that idea went up in flames. Microsoft has been basically ignoring Windows as they spend most of their time on cloud and OpenAI these days. The vast majority of my applications run on MacOS so I'm going to jump across the pond and leave Windows behind after 40 years (I was a very early user).

YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY GAME ON IT just have limited library options (for now) and you may have to tune down the settings a bit.
If you get a Pro or Max chip then even better. In fact the base M4 chip is like almost as powerful as like M2 Ultra or something like that it's insane the performance gains each year

Here’s the thing tho, the salesmen at these places are more incentived to push PCs on customers that don’t know any better because their margins are higher on the sales. They know the PC is worse, but it’s in their best interest to push the shitty PC on non tech friendly people. People know windows, they use Microsoft teams at work, they will be told things like “oh the Mac doesn’t run those programs” or that it’s “not upgradable” so you’re stuck with it unlike the PC (which they were never going to upgrade parts on in its lifetime anyway)

Waitaminute here, dude. I bought my mom a mini-PC last Christmas for less than $600 that is the same size as the Mac Mini. Sure, it does not have an M4 inside, but the average Joe on the street (i. e., my mom) can use it to do good work. No, it doesn’t have any thunder bolt ports on it but it does have USB-C and USB-A and HDMI ports, and it was significantly less that $600 with more ram (32GB) and storage (1TB). So why did you compare a crappy Best Buy machine to the MAC mini? Your average joe shops on Amazon these days, so why go to Best Buy? I think you biased the comparison to make your point! By the way, i own several MACs (M1 Ultra Studio, M3 Max MBP, M4 Mac Mini - arriving tomorrow, and several windows machines which are aging out). I still think m4 Mac mini wins, but the comparison is not so stark as you make it seem. To beef up that m4 mac mini to 32GB and 1TB storage would cost quite a bit (albeit be way more powerful).

I’m so glad you confirmed it’s better than the M1 Max as I am upgrading from my Mac studio M1 Max to the M4 24 GB of RAM so I am happy with my decision

the thing is you CAN game. worst case scenario, you'll have to use CrossOver or something, but there are a ton of mac ports of excellent games like Baldur's Gate 3
