Eddie said that he based the song on a history of a friend of his from Seattle, whose brother had served in the first Gulf War. His friend received
a "yellow letter" in the mail informing him that his brother had died in the war.
Eddie said that the song is unpatriotic, actually, because he wanted that war to end.

It's a standout Pearl Jam song, to say the least, and I bet our grandkids will be talking about it. I sure hope so.
