Homemade Five Spice Powder Recipe

preview_player
Показать описание

Five-spice powder is a spice mixture made with more than five kinds of spices. This is like the most useful Chinese seasoning. It is really easy to make at home.

INGREDIENTS
1 cinnamon stick
3 star anise

INSTRUCTIONS
Toast all the spices in a wok or a cast-iron skillet over low heat for a few minutes to evaporate the moisture and activate the aroma. If you have a couple of spices that are already a powder form, reserve, and mix at the end.
Let the spices cool before putting them into a spice grinder.
Blend the spices as fine as possible. Mix with the reserved spice powder.
Store the five-spice powder in a sealable container.
Notes
Note: Don’t make too much at one time because the aroma does get weaker if you let it sit for too long. I normally just make an oz, which will last me 2-3 months.

Wow, so now that I've made this, I'll never waste money on the store bought stuff again. The last stuff I bought tasted and smelled a lot like dust for the most part, and there was no spice to it. It was awful. I held off making this because I didn't realize I already had all of the stuff to actually make it. I don't have a spice grinder; I use a mortar and pestle, and even with that, it took less than 3 minutes to grind everything down super fine. The beauty of using a mortar and pestle is that I was able to add everything in while still hot (including the already powdered spices) so that all of the flavors could bloom from the heat of what was heated. Absolutely amazing taste, FAR better than anything I've bought that was already premade. Thank you so much!!!

I love 5 spice! I've had it mixed into breads and just so yummmy! Also I didn't know you had arthritis in your wrist! I'm sorry you have it, I have arthritis in joints too and it sucks 😂

I love this video, Erica. My paternal Grandparents were Chinese and even though we can find 5 spice powder blends where I live in Trinidad & Tobago, I find that it is not the same taste as what my Grandfather would use in his cooking. I guess he would doctor things up a bit. I see that the spice companies here use celery powder if they cannot find fennel and it is sometimes a little heavy on the licorice. And they sub white pepper for the Sichuan pepper. Thank you very much for the recipe, I will definitely try it.

For anyone making their own "dried orange peel", don't use an actual large round orange.

Think mandarin family size small citrus orange / tangerine / satsuma etc. instead.

This stuff will make your instant ramen more good. Only a pinch. First time I experimented with it I used about a teaspoon in one instant ramen pack.
It was 5spice as hell.

What brand of grinder do you use?

A lot of grinders caution against against attempting to grind "hard" spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg.

Your grinder handled the cinnamon equity handily
