Mould tools are often made with removable inserts. I used to design them. So this doesn't stop any changes if they wanted to.

To be fair, they legally cannot make Thomas merch anymore, so the only reason I could see them keeping the Edward mold would be to make random 4-4-0s kind of like what they do with the Thomas and Percy molds

“Never” is a bit of a silly overstatement. Possibly not from the same molding. But when/if Hornby ever re-acquires the license, they may want to redo it from scratch anyway with how manufacturing techniques continue to evolve.

I mean, Hornby don’t have ttte licensing anymore, so it doesn’t really matter, and it’s better that the D49 is available, as nobody makes another version (I’d love to see a new one from perhaps Rapido, Bachmann or Accurascale though!)

Just to point out, the new D49 is also completely incorrect, as 62760 (The 'model' depicted here) was one of the D49s with Lentz valve gear, but Hornby's models shows it with Walschearts 🤦‍♂️

Hornby also emptied their old stock pile of moulds so they cannot reproduce a lot of older models.

Used to have some of the Hornby Thomas models...and by god did they suffer from Mazak Rot in the cheap metals they used!

There was me thinking Edward and the D49 were separate molds. I did think it would be a long shot if Hornby were to re-release him the same as Thomas since they were still selling the original class, but if they had to find a use for Edward I guess the Beatles range could have done with a passenger engine.

That’s a really good observation. However I think unless there’s a huge shift in policy at Mattel and at Hornby, never the Twain shall meet.
