On April 13, 1970, the Apollo 13 spacecraft experienced a catastrophic explosion on the way to the Moon. An oxygen tank exploded in the service module. They could not land on the moon but instead used the Moon's gravity to slingshot the spacecraft back to earth, splashing down four days later.

On the very same day of the Apollo 13 explosion, actor Ricky Schroder was born in Brooklyn. He was a child star known for his roles in the 1979 film "The Champ" and the 80s television series "Silver Spoons." He was in the western miniseries "Lonesome Dove" and as an adult, was in the popular police drama "NYPD Blue."
