Apple RAW shootout - ProRaw vs DNG. Apple allows us to shoot 48mp raw files using their proprietary Proraw format. We can also shoot Adobe DNG Raws using third party apps. But which is better?

In this test I will pit Apple's ProRaw 48mp files against DNG files from Adobe Lightroom Camera and Pro Camera. In Adobe Lightroom Classic, I will compare them to see which is best.

Very interesting test. Thank you. I compared recently the Apple 16 Pro Camera Raw vs the HEIC format for my purposes. My conclusion is to shoot in HEIC. The Raw format is of course better, but not as much to justify a much much bigger file size. The HEIC format is good enough for small editing in Lightroom. Also, I will not use the iPhone for photography (only for souvenir snapshots), I still prefer shooting with a camera, even if the phone makes nice (computed) images.

I teach smartphone photography, featuring Lightroom mobile, and had a student ask why I was preferring shooting with the native camera app while I used to use the the Lightroom app when I had the iPhone 11, so I shot with them both with the idea of really comparing them. I too was surprised to find that I preferred the Apple ProRaw version. It was easier to pull back the highlights in bright sunlight and less grainy. And now you remind me that Lightroom is limited to 12 MP just adds another reason to favor the Apple ProRaw and the native app.
