Apple ProRAW vs JPEG: Why you HAVE to shoot RAW on iPhone

Have you tried shooting Apple ProRAW yet? If not, you’re missing out.

In this Apple ProRAW review, we’ll explain the huge difference between Apple ProRAW vs JPEG and walk you through Apple ProRAW editing in Lightroom for iPhone. That way, you can see how different the same edit looks on a JPEG and on a RAW photo shot with an iPhone.

One downside of Apple ProRAW, though, is how much space every file occupies. If you’re shooting iPhone RAW photos, your storage will be vanishing right before your eyes. So try Gemini Photos to scan through your entire photo library and quickly weed out duplicates, similar shots, blurry photos, and other clutter you don’t need anymore.

- what the RAW format is in photography
- what Apple ProRAW is on iPhone 12 or later
- RAW vs Apple ProRAW vs JPEG
- how to turn on and turn off ProRAW on iPhone
- apps for editing Apple ProRAW photos

And here are the time codes for easy navigation:

For some reason, I think I like the JPEG you showed, both with and without the edits 😅

Wow, great Analogy. I hope your channel blows up big time 🙏🏻

while I completely agree, sadly your video doesn't convey the difference at all due to youtube's compression. Pixel peeping is usually not my style, but you need to zoom in, show the posterization and lack of detail or denoise-mess or whatever, otherwise it's almost impossible to see here. The main difference between your final edits is the color tint and while this might have been to the lack of gamut in the jpg, some people might think it's about color difference and some might even like the tint of the jpg better :P

Hey how about using apple built in photo editor vs lightroom ?

Thanks.

Nice analogy with the baked goods. For old fossils like myself, I always used the analogy of a whole bunch of bracketed exposures poured into one image - but how many people these days have ever shot film?

Any idea why my photo's shot in RAW on my iPhone 13 Pro Max would only transfer via Airdrop to my Mac computer as JPEG only? Can't figure out how to transfer as RAW and not have converted to jpeg.

If you take pictures in raw on iPhone, can Android users view them? Do we need to convert raw photos into jpeg first before we send them to non-iPhone users?

how about smartHDR ? is it also present in RAW ?

Good idea, but if you had done it the other way (edit the jpg and copy it over the raw) I think the raw would also look worse then the jpg.

When you take a raw photo it would be good to have the iPhone save a jpeg too. Instead of having to take one shot raw and then one shot jpeg

Good luck if you want to edit in Davinci Resolve.

Good fir Big cameras but for Smartphones you loose the magic software processing of Apple.
In 2022 smartphone photography is all about computational photography.
Greetings.
