Head Construction For Different Character Types

Michael Hampton shows how to tweak head construction to fit different character types, focusing on male and female differences. For female characters, he suggests using softer curves, a less defined bone structure, and more delicate features. He recommends keeping the forehead more vertical, the jawline less sharp, and the brow ridge subtle. For male characters, he emphasizes stronger angles, a wider jaw, a more prominent brow ridge, and a slanted forehead. By adjusting proportions and planes, Hampton demonstrates how to achieve these traits while sticking to the basics of head construction.

Thank you so much for this video! Not only for showing the process, but more importantly for giving me a huge general insight on how I should continue to approach and develop my own – the phrase "a proccess-oriented approach allows you to make mistakes and then correct them" [paraphrased] unlocked an understanding I didn't even know I had in my mind.

This is an excellent tutorial on the general differences between the male and female skull but in my own process I am much more interested in a likeness as a means to convey a real sense of character. To me the important part of what he was saying came in the last minute or so.

I'm trying to understand head construction as much as possible... I really want to get better at portraits. What I really need though is to learn how to properly place facial features
