Track 8 from their fifth and final album “Synchronicity” released in 1983 copyright A&M Records. As with their last, it was recorded at George Martin’s AIR Studios on the small Caribbean island of Montserrat and was later mixed at Le Studio near Morin Heights, Quebec in the wilderness of the Laurentian Mountains. Co-producer and chief engineer Hugh Padgham noticed tension and distance among the band members during the mixing sessions, with only one joining him in the studio while the others spent their time skiing. This is their best-selling album and it received excellent reviews. The band was recognized and lauded by critics for their willingness to experiment and the results are remarkable and unique. It reached the Top Ten in nine countries and No. 1 in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. It achieved Gold status in eight countries and has been certified Platinum in five, including 8X Platinum in the U.S. It was nominated for five Grammys and won three and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009. The band planned to record a sixth album in 1986 but Stewart Copeland broke his collarbone falling off a horse the day before the sessions were to begin and was unable to play the drums. They would disband shortly thereafter, with all members embarking on solo careers. Written by Sting and produced by The Police and Hugh Padgham. Featuring:

Sting – Lead vocals, electric and acoustic bass, keyboards and background vocals, drum machine & sequencer on “Synchronicity I,” sax on “O My God” & oboe on “Mother” & “Tea in the Sahara”
Andy Summers – Lead & rhythm guitars, keyboards & background vocals, lead vocal on “Mother”
Stewart Copeland – Drums, marimba, percussion & background vocals

There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday
There's a black hat caught in a high treetop
There's a flagpole rag and the wind won't stop

I have stood here before inside the pourin' rain
With the world turnin' circles runnin' 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hopin' that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the King of Pain

There's a little black spot on the sun today (it's my soul up there)
It's the same old thing as yesterday (it's my soul up there)
There's a black hat caught in a high treetop (it's my soul up there)
There's a flagpole rag and the wind won't stop (it's my soul up there)

(I have stood here before inside the pourin' rain)
(With the world turnin' circles runnin' 'round my brain)
(I guess I'm always hopin' that you'll end this reign)
(But it's my destiny to be the King of Pain)

There's a fossil that's trapped in a high cliff wall (it's my soul up there)
There's a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall (it's my soul up there)
There's a blue whale beached by a spring tide's ebb (it's my soul up there)
There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web (it's my soul up there)

(I've stood here before inside the pourin' rain)
(With the world turnin' circles runnin' 'round my brain)
(I guess I'm always hopin' that you'll end this reign)
(But it's my destiny to be the King of Pain)

There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man lookin' for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleepin' on a golden bed
There's a skeleton chokin' on a crust of bread

King of pain

There's a red fox torn by a huntsman's pack (it's my soul up there)
There's a black-winged gull with a broken back (it's my soul up there)

There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday

(I stood here before inside the pourin' rain)
(With the world turnin' circles runnin' 'round my brain)
(I guess I'm always hopin' that you'll end this reign)
(But it's my destiny to be the King of Pain)

King of Pain, King of Pain
King of Pain, I'll always be
King of pain, I'll always be
King of Pain, I'll always be
King of Pain, I'll always be
King of Pain
