This is the same idea that my aquariums and ponds use, I have fish tanks full of plants that feed on fish waste. A couple of them the plants even grow out of the tank.

The plants actually lower my work load a lot as they keep the water parameters far more stable for my animals as well a getting rid of ammonia and other toxic nutrients. Rooted plants even mean that I have no real need to remove the waste at all since it just goes to creating more robust plants which gives the fish more cover, more stable conditions, and food that can be utilized by juvenile fish. Some of my tanks dont even need to be fed at all yet the fish remain well fed on microorganisms.

One of my favorites is duckweed, it can be a nuisance but considering the fact it can double its mass in 24 hours and sucks up such large amounts of ammonia very rapidly its a great tool for me. It also is edible and makes great feed for both fish and other animals, the nutrient profile is really impressive too.
