This is a post from over at @undulationsasmr that fits in with the cable-related things I've been putting on here. Just going to paste that comment😀...

So, this is something super simple that fixes an iPhone related problem that has been plaguing me for over a year. I have a set of wired earbuds that I really like for listening to asmr and music at night. They are a classic aux type (4-pole trrs type for the gearfolk) and I use an aux to lightning adapter. But the chance of opening Siri and sleep-dialing somebody is pretty high, for me at least. Turn off Siri? Sure, but then the phone reverts to old school Apple Voice Control. Which in some ways turns out worse. I checked a lot of places, searched, it's apparently a common problem (we'll see).

So, I did a "cables" video on my other channel and eventually came up with the simple solution to "downshift" the earbuds to headphones-only (no in-line mic or switch). It takes the 4-conductor buds down to 3-conductor buds, temporarily (and yes I tried buying 3-conductor buds, awful sound). I bought the 6" aux extension cord for like $5 as an elegant form of this hack - BUT there are many other ways to do it, some that might just be laying around your place:

- a longer aux extension cord is fine.

- an aux cable and a barrel connector is fine.

- a pink/green mic/phones splitter is fine (plug the 4 pole into the lightning adapter and the buds into the green)

- THE most likely random connector for this is a headphone sharing splitter. Maybe cable version? Maybe connector version? Any will work. The splitter's plug goes into the lightning, then put the buds into one of the splitter jacks.

Let me know if you have any question about getting this to work!
