Many years ago I saw a car radiator over a firebox used to heat a good-sized inground pool. Note this was when car radiators were 100% copper, not the plastic and aluminum [censored] that's used today. You still might get away with it if you were careful not to overfire it or let it run dry.
I made an effective solar pool heater at my parents old house by covering the pool deck on one side with plastic and making a hole so it would drain back into the skimmer. Also don't underestimate the floating solar covers. That's all we used for 20 years after we found how much it cost us to heat with propane.
