I have a few videos showing how to fix an AC, before you watch those, please watch this video first. In this video I explain that if you don't do the repair carefully, it could mean death by electrocution. I share a few stories and show how to verify if there is power going to the unit or not.

Excellent idea making a safety video. I'm a safety guardian at my job and it's refreshing to see people taking the time to teach others about safety.

Last week one of our techs at work had a similar scenario that I talked about in the video. He pulled out the AC condenser disconnect and when he touched a terminal with his needle nose, it sparked. He investigated and found that the disconnect was not wired at all! Whoever put in the disconnect pretty much bypassed it. Taking out the plug does nothing. So double checking if your unit has power is an important step.. Stay safe!

I was taught to always test your leads on the continuity setting before testing voltage. If you a bad lead it might not show voltage even though it’s there. I’ve done this and taught this for 25 years now.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Sometimes our outside unit works, more often than not, we have to stick something in the grid and manually get the fan spinning. You can hear the unit turn on, the fan just won't spin. Especially when it's high temperature outside.

My husband likes to fix things himself to save money. I will be sure to show him your videos.

Many blessings to you!!!

Every time I have a question, you almost always have a video to explain. You really are helping me in my HVAC training. I'm getting ready to go to school to be a technician and these videos have really been helpful. I toured a school I'm interested in just today, and when I was taken to the training shop I knew exactly what I was looking at . Thanks Jay👍

Hi, my name is Rick a retired Electrician, and I used to use my fuse pullers to push the plunger in on motor starters and contacted because they were plastic with no chance of electrical shock. Hope this helps.

Honestly, this is possibly the most important video on your channel. Added bonus was the understatement of the year : “… electricity can kill you, and then you’re having a lot more problems than just not having a cool house.” Love it! 😂

I use to be a an AC tech years ago. One thing I was taught when it comes to testing a 240 volt circuit, is to referance each hot lead to ground.
So on the contractor where power comes in from the disconnect, take one of your meter leads and touch one side of the contactor and take the other lead and touch metal and you should get a reading of 120 volts. Do the same for the other side of the contactor and you should get a reading of 120 volts. It is a little safer because you have less voltage in a close area of your hand if the test leads slip. Less voltage through your body this way. Or you accidentally cause them to come together causing a short circuit. The condensing unit should be grounded if wired properly.
Just my thoughts other than that everyone of his videos have been very well though out and planned and great detail put into them.
Safety first!

Great video and thx for sharing your close calls. It's always easier learning that way rather than from your own injuries or emergency room visits!

Was about to work on a 480 volt motor for a pump. A few feet away was the named breaker for that pump. I turned it off and opened up the connection box on the motor to disconnect the wiring to pull motor for replacement. Luckily I was taught to always check power with meter because to my surprise, it still had 480 on it. 480 will hit you so hard it will throw you across the room.
I asked my supervisor where I can kill the power, and he said Oh yeah, we changed that feed to a box on the floor below. I asked him why he left the breaker near the pump with no note or anything. He just had a blank stare. I removed the breaker name plate, removed the breaker and noted that disconnect was one floor below pump. Around electricity trust nothing, even yourself sometimes.

I just bought a non-contact voltage tester last year when I was trying to figure why my light fixture failed. Great device and I found the wire break quickly using it.
