How To Grow A Huge Indoor ZZ Plant in Chicago

NOTE: ZZ and ZZZ or Zenzi plants are similar but different.

ZZ PLANT CARE
LIGHT REQUIREMENTS
ZZ plants do best in moderate to bright indirect light, but will do fine in extremely low light areas. If the light is too intense for your ZZ, you may see some scaling (brown spots) on the leaves. Curling leaves can also indicate too much light. This plant is ideal for a windowless office or bathroom where it will only receive a small amount of light from fluorescent lights.
WATER REQUIREMENTS
The ZZ Plant is like a cactus in that it needs less, rather than more, water. Water your ZZ Plant only when the soil is dry—perhaps every 1-2 weeks depending on your indoor climate. Let the water drain through the bottom, empty the saucer of any water, and then allow to dry out again. One of the only ways you can kill this low maintenance plant is to over water it. A ZZ Plant that turns yellow means that it is getting too much water and it may be rotting.
HUMIDITY PREFERENCE
This plant does not require any extra humidity.
PLANT FOOD
Fertilize your ZZ twice a year with a general purpose plant food.
ADDITIONAL CARE
As a survival technique, the ZZ Plant has evolved to start dropping its leaflets to conserve moisture during periods of severe drought. If you forget to water yours and see the leaves fall off, don’t give up hope! Water your plant immediately and it should come back. This plant is shiny on its own, never spray with leaf shine. Ignore this plant and it will be happiest.
TOXICITY
ZZ Plants are mildly toxic to pets and humans. Typically, ingestion will cause mouth and stomach irritation and possible vomiting.

ZENZI PLANT CARE
LIGHT REQUIREMENTS
Your Zenzi plant will do best in moderate to bright indirect light but will do fine in extremely low light areas. If the light is too intense for your Zenzi, you may see some scaling (brown spots) on the leaves. Curling leaves can also indicate too much light. This plant is ideal for a windowless office or bathroom where it will only receive a small amount of light from fluorescent lights.
WATER REQUIREMENTS
The Zenzi is like a cactus in that it needs less, rather than more, water. Water your Zenzi only when the soil is dry—perhaps every 2-3 weeks depending on your indoor climate. Let the water drain through the bottom, empty the saucer of any water, and then allow to dry out again. One of the only ways you can kill this low maintenance plant is to over water it. When a Zenzi turns yellow, it is getting too much water and it may be rotting.

PLANT FOOD
Fertilize your Zenzi twice a year with general-purpose plant food.
TOXICITY
Zenzi Plants are mildly toxic to pets and humans. Typically, ingestion will cause mouth and stomach irritation and possible vomiting.
ADDITIONAL CARE
Your Zenzi likes to be pot bound so repotting will not need to be done for quite some time. As a survival technique, the Zenzi Plant has evolved to start dropping its leaflets to conserve moisture during periods of severe drought. If you forget to water yours and see the leaves fall off, don’t give up hope! Water your plant immediately and it should come back. This plant is shiny on its own, never spray with leaf shine. I got my first ZZ plant yesterday. Thanks for the awesome video. I’m in Pittsburgh so similar weather. 59 sunny days a year on average! I’m going to get my little guy a personal grow light. Most of my other plants are low light plants and don’t grow tall but I’d like to grow this ZZ. Thanks again!

Just came across your video and not only are your ZZ’z stunning but your voice is so soothing. I just had 3:08 minutes of Zen moment. Thank you

Your zz is so beautiful. I think maybe I need to repot mine. It is in front of the window, but I am in an apartment, so there is a bit of an alcove that blocks some light. Love this video.

What type of soil do you keep the large ZZ plant in? It's about that time mine gets transplanted into a larger pot.

My Zz is really happy but isn’t growing any new shoots. I changed the pot about 3 weeks ago, could that still be affecting it? I keep it indoors right next to a SW-facing window (in California, so plenty of light)

I don't understand how the planter/vase works? Do you have your zz in a ceramic pot inside of the large white one? Obviously she likes it...I just wondered how it breathes in that white floor vase?

WoW 7 years...what's her name? She's a family member. Great Plant Dad. I'm struggling with one of mine. It looks dehydrated and kind of whimpy. No leaf drop but it looks weak.
