The Truth About Dyson Air Purifiers - Comparison to Cheaper Options (v2)

In this video we review Dyson air purifiers. How much airflow do they really have? Are they really as bad of a value as they seem to be? We answer these questions and many more in this video.

Note that this review applies to non-Cryptomic Purifier Cool models (TP07 and TP01) and the Cryptomic Purifier Cool Formaldehyde (TP09). It's also applicable for all Purifier Hot+Cool models (HP09, HP07, and HP02) and both Purifier Humidify+Cool models (PH04 and PH03).

08/25/2024 Amendment:
Since the making of this video, Levoit has removed all marketing materials claiming that the Core 300 has a true HEPA filter. As such, our comparison of Dyson purifiers to the Core 300 in this video is no longer applicable.

If we were to redo this video today, we would compare Dyson purifiers to the Kenmore PM1005 instead, which does offer similar particle filtration quality to Dysons (it actually has a HEPA filter), and also has more airflow than Dysons at a much lower price.

I’m a Dyson fan but man you did a great job with being truly unbiased, not directly writing it off but also being honest about the downsides. Keep it up.

Another great video. This is one of the few channels where I feel like i'm getting real information and not a sales job.

Having the carbon filter in front of the HEPA filter would be an awful idea. The only job for activated carbon is to absorb gases into the microscopic holes in the carbon. Putting it in front could easily clog those holes and negate the efficiency of the activated carbon. Dyson chose that order for a reason.

I have this model and it’s utterly amazing. The filters are nearly 2 years old and they still have 40% life left in them according to the app at least. It’s so effective at heating a room, and the airflow is so good, while it’s no AC, it goes a long way to cooling down a room.

All your points about Dyson’s system are “on paper” true. However, in real world tests, Dyson’s excel at purifying air. Watch the vacuum wars reviews. There is deeper engineering and theory going on at Dyson than the simple specs of CFM. I personally have 3 different Dyson models and LOVE THEM

I was in the process of buying a new air purifier and was a bit surpriced about the claim that most of the air was bypassing the filter.

I actually contacted Dyson about the claims of this video. They explicitly told me that all the air is getting pulled through the filter. The hole in the back is for when you don't want the fan to blow air at you, but to have it blow towards the back (They call it Diffuse Mode).

So my question is, how did you came to your conclusion?
Or is Dyson just flatout lying to me?

I asked this question regarding the TP09 model.

Thanks to all your great info. I ended up going with a HealthMate, mostly because the cheaper top purifiers on your list were harder to find with my country’s voltage. As I live in a polluted city center, I figured I can benefit from the extra gas filtration capacity too.

An important thought about air purifiers is are they sealed. Most aren't sealed. You'll notice after a few months of use even the clean air vents are covered in dust. I would love to know which purifiers you've tested are actually sealed to mitigate this.

Great review as usual! What is about Big+Quiet BP03 - does it also have same problem with air flow?

I understand the issue you have with the Dysons but the new Big and Quiet Formaldehyde BP04 looks like might be a significant improvement. It would be awesome if you could review that unit at some point.

Great Review! 👍Yes, Dyson Fan air purifiers are NOT serious air purification solutions and I've never recommended any of them to customers to help improve the overall air quality in their environments. The new Big and Quiet appears to be a much better and more serious air purifier than their Fan options but is it elite? Because it sure is expensive...😃

I bought a dyson heater fan that has the purifier. I really don't use it for the purifier tho. Honestly my filter is almost 100% uses and the hepa is still white. It's a dyson hp07 I got on sale for $299 2 years ago.

I like Dyson. But, a big problem is that their latest filters smell after a couple months. It obtains the smells. I think it's the charcoal filter they used.

I really appreciate your equipment reviews!
Request: I’ve not found in-depth analysis of portable air coolers. I live in Southern California and need an air cooler the does not require outdoor ventilation.
😊 Thank you…

I just bought a Dyson BP04 this week and don't see how they say this is better . The Dyson BP04 says it delivers "23 gallons of airflow per second3 of purified air over 32 feet. So 23 x 60 (seconds) is 1380 Gallons per Min, and would mean that Dyson TP09 delivers more as their website says "77 Gallons per second" and that's 4620 gallons per min, and would cover 617.60 cubic feet. If it was all purified air.

if your calculations to fill a 1500 square foot condo, and Dysons Bp04 only covers 1380 gallons per min thus only 184 cubic feet / min then I would need at least 6 of the new Dyson BP04 to cover a 1500 square foot condo.

I think something is off, Dyson will not show their CADR rate for any of their purifiers, only saying X amount of gallons of air per second.

I was thinking about returning the BP04 and for that same price of $1187 getting a Conway Airmega 400S and a couple Conway Airmega AP-1512HHS but i honestly don't know anymore.

Conway displays their CDAR rating but does not share the amount of air in gallons per second so it is hard to compare between Dyson and other brands because of that.

I don't understand how they can claim with the BP04 that its "New airflow delivery system offers more than double the airflow of previous models, " if its only 23 gallons of purified air per second. If the TP09 is 77 gallons of air per second. That would mean the TP09 delivers only HALF of what the BP line does so that 77 gallons would go actuary towards a 11 gallons per second or 12 gallons per second of actual purified air.

Suggestions? Should I return this Dyson BP04 and go with 1x Conway Airmega 400S and a couple Conway Airmega AP-1512HHS or what is best ???
