I’m a hair stylist & just want to say hair dye is much, much safer now. There was some controversy around Brazilian blowouts (chemical straightening/smoothing technique) having formaldehyde in it more recently around 2010, but they’ve been reformulated to my knowledge. There’s more risk to the hair stylist breathing in chemicals than it is for the client coming in to get their hair straightened, permed, or coloured.

I’ve been a platinum blonde for 15 years. I went to hair school and was surprised that bleach was discovered fairly recently (early 20th century) sometimes my scalp gets murdered because my hair was too clean when I got my roots done, I can’t imagine how Jean’s scalp was with that madness she used.

In the early 2, 000s my father was told by his oncologist that he developed bladder cancer from dark brown hair dye. Luckily, it was caught in time and he's still alive with a urostomy procedure.

I am, or was, a redhead. Dark red. I dyed my hair for years. As a teen, for fun. Then to cover the gray. Finally it just became too much to cover the gray. So I decided to go gray, actually it went white, not gray. People ask me which salon I use. When I explain that I don't dye it they don't believe me. Now everyone wants white hair. My hair is healthier and thicker when I stopped the dye.

Very good history of hair dye! Bleaching methods prior to the 1930s produced very subtle results with most dyes being used for darkening the hair or to cover gray....and of course henna had been around for centuries to redden the hair. Jean Harlow was one of the first true "bleached blondes" and the early process of transforming her hair to platinum was very toxic....anyone that's ever accidentally mixed bleach with ammonia while cleaning knows the fumes can literally make you pass out....imagine that sitting on top of your head! But advancements in hair bleaching came quick as Jean Harlow's hair started a trend across the country with many women visiting their salons demanding platinum blonde. Also Jean Harlow didn't remain platinum blonde she ended up going red and then adopted a more natural blonde color as the intense bleaching started eating away at her hair. I think Harlow's death would probably be more attributed to scarlet fever and other illnesses she had early in life that damaged her kidneys leading to kidney failure, and in the days before dialysis that was pretty much a death sentence.

Also most of the chemicals that were linked to things like bladder cancer and leukemia, especially in darker hair dyes, were removed by the 1970s so after about 1975 or so the risk of developing cancer from hair dye use became slim to none.

As a hairstylist I want to point out how you're perfectly safe as a color client in our salons. Make sure that if you do color in your home that you have open windows or fans for ventilation. You'll be just fine!

What an adorable baby! Anyway, thanks for this. I had no idea how many illnesses she suffered from and from such a young age. Makes one wonder what caused so many afflictions.

As an aside, I do think she was a natural blond, just not naturally white like they made her with that toxic combination. How awful!

Hair color isn't nearly as toxic as it once was. Most box dyes today are peroxide and ammonia free. Hair bleach powder is the most toxic out of all the hair dyes these days and even that isn't nearly as powerful as it once was during Jean Harlow's day. This was a fantastic film. Thank you and Rest on Jean...

Her hair must have felt like straw. Poor thing really suffered in every way. These Hollywood stars from the "Golden Ages" lived terrible lives.

Aren't pregnant women advised not to dye their hair? I had an injury to the skin on my scalp which is still tender years later, so, I just know if I put any hair dye on it, it'll (at best) be painful or (at worst) give me a chemical burn along with the burning feeling! I'm resigned to simply letting the grey take over. I must admit, it's the in between that's annoying. I've seen ladies with grey hair and a great cut and it looks really good. Ok, I've rambled on enough!😸
