The EU Settlement Scheme allows EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens (and their family members) who were living in the UK before the end of the Brexit transition period (31 December 2020) to apply for settled or pre-settled status to continue living, working, and studying in the UK after Brexit.

Key Points of the EU Settlement Scheme:
Eligibility:

The applicant must be an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen, or a family member of one.
The person must have been residing in the UK before 31 December 2020.
Applicants must apply by the deadline, which was set for 30 June 2021 (although there are provisions for late applications if there are reasonable grounds for missing the deadline).
Settled Status vs Pre-Settled Status:

Settled Status: Granted to those who have lived in the UK continuously for 5 years or more. This allows them to stay in the UK permanently.
Pre-Settled Status: Granted to those who have lived in the UK for less than 5 years. This allows them to stay in the UK until they reach 5 years of residence, at which point they can apply for settled status.

Rights and Benefits:
Those with settled or pre-settled status have the right to:
Work, study, and access healthcare (NHS).
Use public services and benefits.
Travel in and out of the UK.
Bring family members to the UK (in certain circumstances).
However, the settlement status does not give an automatic right to reside in the EU, and citizens may need to comply with other countries' immigration rules.
Application Process:

Applicants are required to complete an online application. The process is usually straightforward, and most applicants don’t need to submit physical documents (although some might be required to provide proof of residence).
The application is free of charge, and decisions are typically made within a few weeks.

Late Applications:
While the deadline for most applications was 30 June 2021, the UK government allows late applications in cases where there are reasonable grounds for not applying on time (such as illness, care responsibilities, or lack of awareness of the scheme).

Permanent Residency Rights:
Those with settled status have the right to remain in the UK permanently. If they are absent from the UK for more than 5 consecutive years, they may lose their settled status.
Pre-settled status holders need to ensure they complete the process to gain settled status before they reach 5 years in the UK.
