2. Define your expectation of the Syntax
3. Learn modern Javascript
4. Don't start with the weird parts of Javascript
5. Know the legacy but at later stage.
6. Don't learn JQuery
7. Learn fundamentals properly

Following your course on programming, and I absolutely agree that it should be taught separately from JS, especially for beginners like me. I spent months trying to learn JS where the programming lessons were taught simultaneously, and it was extremely frustrating. It's nice to have specific focus on "good form" so to speak, when programming.
