We had an air source heat pump, coupled with solar panels installed way back in 2011. We had that first system replaced some 3 years ago because it was faulty. Last year (November2023), we had it serviced by a third party company, the installing company having gone bust. It lasted a week or so before it broke down. We've had the plumbers and sparkies attend almost weekly, trying various things, flushing the system, changing the PCB, pressurising the system, adding what i understand to be an expansion tank, changing the heat exchanger and it still doesn't work. The manufacturer’s warranty will undoubtedly run out way before it's resolved. I wouldn't recommend a heat pump to anyone, at all.

You dont mention that ground source heat pumps FREEZE after a time as all the heat around the pipes is taken up thus freezing the ground around the pipes.

So why do they need an electric heater to stop them freezung up in the winter. If they so effocent they will not need one

I don't know why the government isn't more involved in this, seeing as they're offering grants anyway. Why don't they just employ a couple of experts in each county, who can advise people on the grants available and who they should get to install the system? Offering grants, but then not advertising the fact, and leaving consumers to around, seems a bit daft. I'd definitely do this if I didn't have to do a load of research myself.

The only thing he forgot to tell you is that, 400% is only in summer (when you don't need heating) and that percentage go's down dramatically in cold weather (when you need heat) sometimes alot less than 90%. Please do your own research !

Love the thumbnail…400% efficient, right! So every 1Kw of electricity used puts 4Kw of heat into your home…..😂 er’ No! Let’s not forget the installation cost is many thousands..how long before that pays for itself, whilst you are absorbing running costs and maintenance. Air source tries to further freeze already frozen outside winter air which can’t be a great idea…Ground source, well who can afford to install that!…you’d likely be wealthy enough to just pay your existing heating without qualm.…Let’s now have a giggle at the projected savings…£1600 per year minimum….How much do they think is usual to pay for home heating? Since my 3 bed semi for heating alone runs around 700-800 per year, no heat pump is going to beat that on running costs. Thanks for the video…my mind is made up, that £5000+ is better in my pocket.

This is appalling! I can't understand how a company can be so brass-necked as to make such extravagant claims when the facts on the ground are so different. Where do we start:
1. Comparing the 90% efficiency of a boiler and the alleged 400% of a heat-pump in the context of cost-saving is a nonsense. Cost of gas per kWh (approx 6.5 pence) is much less than the cost of electricity per kWh (approx 24.5 pence), so efficiency gains are soon lost.
2. Even a cursory glance at the specifications on the heat-pump manufacturer's websites will show that the Coefficient of Performance ("efficiency") drops to between 100% and 200% during the ambient temperatures we experience in winter in the UK, particularly in the north (where, contrary to popular belief, many millions of people actually live). The video does allude to this, but the headline "400%!!!" figure is the one that's constantly repeated.
3. No mention of the risk of icing on the external unit during cold, damp conditions, and the loss of efficiency created by installing a buffer tank as mitigation.
4. No mention of the fact that, in many cases, entire wet central heating systems have to be replaced with larger bore pipes and larger radiators due to the lower hot water temperatures provided by heat-pumps compared to gas or oil boilers. (Although the cost of this may have been factored in to the upper ranges of the cost-estimates).

I invite the makers of this video to issue a rebuttal to these four points based on actual, real-world before/after examples of heat-pump installation.
