On March 5, 1996 John Fennell - a founding member of the republican paramilitary group the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) - was bludgeoned to death at a caravan park in Ireland.

The 40 year-old's brutal breeze block killing marked the second in a vicious internal feud that would see many others, including a nine year-old schoolgirl, lose their lives just two years before peace was brokered in Troubles-torn Northern Ireland.

In a powerful, raw and open interview, John's widow Deirdre Owens tells his story through her eyes. Speaking indepth for the first time about losing her partner, and father of her 10 month old twin boys, she reveals how for 26 years she has been quietly fighting for not only justice, but also a proper investigation into his killing.

Despite being stonewalled by both the Irish and British authorities, she vows to continue to uncover the truth around his murder, even if it means doing it on her own. And she explains why she believes there was British State involvement in his death.

Brilliant Trish
These are the type of stories that need told The Radio/News everyday just give you totals of people killed But never told about the heartache and devastation of the families left behind

Excellent interview Trish, another dimension to the conflict, very sad. I think the lesson here is that the conflict had a way of creating many different innocent victims, the partner of someone directly involved, the children of those persons, and a nine year child losing her little life over a power struggle within a group taking part in a conflict she could not possibly understand, very sad, poor little thing, thanks for the post, M.

Scary to think of the many agents still at the top of these criminal gangs who’ll never see a court room. living the high life at the expense of their victims and their families. She spoke very well! a strong woman indeed.

Those horrible Gardes and RUC not protecting the Terrorists who saw the latter as legitimate targets . I wonder if she feels any guilt about the many people her ex would have been involved in killing or the families left behind .

Really enjoyed this! It's not something you see too often, the women behind the men of the conflict here. You have a great way with you when interviewing people who are recounting their traumatic stories ❤️

So many lives were tragically lost during all the feuds ( both republican & loyalist), yet there's never been a reconciliation process initiated WITHIN the respective communities . Maybe these horrific feuds should be given some consideration in any upcoming ' truth & reconciliation ' process?? God bless all the souls 🙏

Thank you again Patricia, for the depth and compassion of your interview. Once again I am shocked by the arrogance and bigotry of the police. Will it ever change?
