Thailand's prime minister-elect Paetongtarn Shinawatra, also known as Ung Ing, is the youngest-ever individual to assume the country's top job. The 37-year-old is a relative newcomer in politics, never having served in government or been elected as either a parliament member or minister.

Duncan knows the Thai political scene in Thailand as well as any foreigner. Good interview. Let's see, if Ung Ing can last longer than her predecessor.

She said, " it is time for me to do something for my country and party"
So, prior to today, all the things that she had done, in her heart and mind, were not for Thailand... they are for herself and her family.
And, she got elected to lead Thailand

Despite her own relative youth it is hard for Ung Ing to develop her own brand among young Thai voters who are smart enough to see that, despite the soothing words, what she actually represents are the vested interests her billionaire father and the bosses of the various factions of the party, who are mainly old style upcountry Thai Chinese gangster politician types involved in commercial exploitation of the indigenous rural populations, not much different from the pro-military politicians they have allied with. How can she compete with the visionary young People's Party politicians who have detailed policies thought out for everything from education to social welfare to decentralisation to economic policy and are not beholden to old style politicians? At the previous budget debate the old style politicians in the Thaksinite cabinet under Srettha had such little understanding of their own ministerial budgets that the opposition MPs had to help them out with the details in the debate.

Isn't Thailand Constitutional Law indicate that A PM should NOT be younger than 40???
So why is she selected.
Another Takshin is indeed going to be interesting.
Best Wishes To All Thailand ❤

Great questions from a well read presenter answered by an equally well prepared interviewer.

Seems like younger than her age is her own knowledge and capacity, so just the mouthpiece of her daddy. Nothing more.

I think of Bee Gees' song, "I Started A Joke". Pray for Thailand!

Many believe that she is only a puppet. Someone powerful is behind her. Anyway hopefully Thailand will flourish under her

Personally, she has a lot of expectations set before her. Her rise to Premiership was somewhat accidental by nature. She didn’t win the election her self. Given the constitution’s rule, her party submitted 3 Prime Ministerial candidate. She was the runner up after Srettha. Naturally, when he was ousted by the Constitutional court, she became the obvious choice. Although there was a 3rd remaining candidate, but he has too many baggage and the party probably thought it’s going to be troublesome down the line. Although she may not have any political experience, what she has going for her self is a clean slate. Whether that’s true or false the opposition will likely dig into those. Politics is dirty and is a cut throat game. Will she be able to handle the things that will now be targeted at her remains to be seen.

Her biggest and most urgent task is how can she solve the household debt and strength of the middle class economy who is the main block of tax income of the country. It is no means an easy feat because her recent predecessor couldn’t even handled it. Though he was only in office for less than a year before leaving.

What’s changed now though are gone of the 250 appointed upper house. Who at the general election had power to vote for PM in the parliament. They are no more. So this time, it was the first time that the Parliament was able to elect a PM candidate from MP’s who has gone through the election. The will of the people.

Thaksin has boosted his own base and now he expand from that base by not progressive enough and not conservative through the new prime minister; her daughter. Focus on expanding.

Her downfall will be the doing of her corrupt dad who will face the constitution court for les majestic case which is jail term if convicted. Also I do foresee a coup if she does try to influence the court to help him and also bring her aunt convicted Yingluck back from exile.
