Not every tree can be a bonsai. They are meant to look like miniature giants. So tree types with big leaves are not suitable.

Edit: To all who commented about leaves can be trained to a smaller size, you are correct. That’s what we do in bonsai but the starting point is important to get the best results. It is impossible to shrink the leaves of regular maple to the same size as Japanese maple if both are undergoing the same bonsai planting process. People, it’s as if you’re trying to argue pigmy children can grow taller by better diet. Obviously. But the potential is way less than if you started with regular or even taller people. Therefore, if you’re putting together a basketball team…forget it, Doorknobs. Smh.
