Whale vomit, bee spit, and tree tumors. Humans sure value some wild things 😅

Burlwood may be valuable, but I wouldn't call it rare. It's actually rather common in a forest.

I'm pretty sure in Ireland hundreds of years ago people would bury Burks in swamps and bogs because they were deemed "useless". Now if you find a bog burl it's worth a lot more than a regular one.

Burl is definitely more valuable that other wood, but it is objectively not worth more than gold lol

"Worth more than gold"? I don't think so.

Burlwood is also very resistant to developing cracks, compared to straighter-grain sections. This makes it exceptionally useful for turning into wooden bowls, cups, and other liquid-holding vessels. It still can develop cracks, but it's far less likely than with normal wood, especially if the container is subjected to temperature extremes. The Saami "kuksa" or "coffee cup, " is usually carved from birch burlwood because of this quality, making it an outstanding choice for one's daily hot water drinking needs. (Kuksa are also usually meant to be crafted by the owner themselves, and are often decorated further with carvings, making each one an unique treasure.)

Koa wood. A whole koa tree is worth nearly 1M because it only grows in certain levels in mountains on Hawaii. Its infact so rare that its illegal to cut down unless the tree was already dead

I remember growing up, we had a walnut tree that was infested with fire ants. Company came out to give my parents a quote to remove it. They ended up paying my parents 10k to take it. It wrapped 3/4 the way around the trunk, roughly 4ft tall and probably 2.5 - 3 ft thick.

So trees developed a unique way to fight off infection/disease, and people found a way to capitalize on it 🙃

That wood growth seems analogous to human keloids.

Burls are full of meristematic tissue (essentially plant stem cells) and many trees have evolved to have burls at their base or amongst their roots so if the main tree is damaged (often the traditional culprit is bushfire) they can regrow from the premade burls. Best example I can think of is the redwoods.

Unfortunately because of the worth of the grain, a lot of people will *poach* the burls off of wild trees and kill them in the process. Burl poaching is a stupidly rampant issue.

Burl is absolutely beautiful. I have a few antique pieces of furniture that have walnut burl. Its incredibly beautiful.
