More than 2.6 billion people rely on the ocean's fish as their number one source of protein. Oceans are one of the critical issues on the agenda at the upcoming Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.

Overfishing is the largest threat to to fisheries globally. Half the world's fish stocks are fully exploited, a quarter are considered depleted or over-exploited, and only one remaining quarter considered fish sustainable.

Sustainable fishery practices have been adopted by local fishermen in the Gulf of Mannar in South India, in partnership with the local government and UNDP. Since implementing these new and sustainable ways of fishing, coral reef in the region has recovered, and an annual two and a half month ban on fishing now ensures that local fish stocks will regenerate year after year.
