It’s called a chestnut and no peeling it doesn’t hurt as you can see the horse is not pulling away and looked relatively happy it’s basically like trimming your nails hope this helped they didn’t go to close because of the risk of cutting the horse

I dunno how it is in other cultures, but with some native american/first nations tribes, we would rub our palms on the chestnut and then our hands back together, and let the horse smell it on our hand, it's supposedly a way that the horse bonds with you, and they learn you're their friend by combining our scents.

My old horse used to get such bad chestnuts! Had to have a Ferrier come in more often to trim the chestnuts than it’s hoof 😂

Uughhh, so satisfying to peel!! It is like the horses dew claw. In prehistoric times, they had 3 toes that turned to hooves, as evolution went on the third toe moved up the leg soften into this pad type texture. Super cool!
