Chestnuts are a vestigial toe remnant. They need to be removed or they form thick deposits that can rip, it doesn't hurt the horse, it keeps them from discomfort

imagine someone just comes up to you, rips off your blisters and then feeds it to their dogs

I see a lot of these comments, saying that this dude is in the wrong for ripping/removing this horses chestnut, even though it’s basically the same thing as trimming your nails down so they don’t get in the way of things. It doesn’t hurt the horse at all but I do agree that tools would’ve been used, but because the chestnut was such a small Size the tools would not have been needed to take the chest off rather the horse was probably pulling away from his hand to try to remove the chestnut. Hope this helped.

Or you can put vasaline on them, let it soften them and then gently peel them off. Just a suggestion, but it works.

I’ve figured out how to get 4 slider sized hamburgers from a horse without killing it

i love seeing how many non equestrians run into this vid lol. thats just dead keratin. basically that grows and grows due to the extra toe horses used to have cause evolution. this horse thought the guy was just lifting their feet(hes a farrier so of course the horse thought this) its not painful. they ca be dog treats but for some reason my dogs look at me like im crazy then they go eating horse chocolate balls instead lol

Guys the horse probably lifted its leg because it thought he was asking it to pick up its hoof to be cleaned or trimmed.

Hahaha, special dog treats. The collie I had as a kid loved them and hoof trimmings.

Omg I just realized farriers used to do this!
So hard to find a thorough farrier anymore.

My old horses chestnuts were gooey underneath, so I could never just peel them off. He had seborrheia keratosis, in other words he produced too much oil which made them sticky. And they had a very strong but not unpleasant smell.

Question: what are they and how does it affect the horse? Do you need to treat it or just leave it?

are horses just dog treat machines? I've heard they also like hoof trimmings and poop
