This weeks "What's Up Wednesday?" call with Flora Peterson, we talked about loving our imperfections.
Wabi Sabi- The Ancient Art of finding perfection in imperfection.
Each and every single one of us, for the most part, learn something from someone else by either being taught or by observing. But how many of us question what it was that we have just learned? Is this the only way of doing it?
Flora shared a fabulous story that I hope I tell it correctly but, also, with a twist.
The Ends of The Ham Story:
A couple is cooking dinner and one is baking a ham and the other is helping out in the kitchen. We will call them Chuck and Larry. Chuck begins to prepare the ham by cutting off the ends of it before placing it in the pan. Larry sees what Chuck did and asked why he cut off the ends of the ham. Chuck begins to tell him that he actually is not sure why the ends have to be cut off but this is just the way his mom taught him and her ham always came out amazing. So, out of curiosity, Chuck calls up his mom, Sally and asked her why she cuts the ends of the ham off. Sally begins to tell him that she isn't really sure but it was just what she learned from watching HER mother cook the ham and it was always fabulous. So, Sally calls her mother and asks her: "Hey mom, why do you cut off the ends of the ham?" and Sally mom says: "Well, sweetie, so that it will fit in my pan of course!"
For generations, each was doing the same thing because it was what they were taught thinking that it would make the ham taste better. But in reality it was just so the ham could fit into the small pan.
Think about something that you have been doing for as long as you can remember. Did someone teach you how to do it? Did you questioned why they did it that way? Did you look for other ways of doing it? Sometimes we learn something from someone and we think that this is just how it's done.
Flora wanted us to think about how much time we spent trying to be perfect. Hours invested in getting our hair perfect, our body perfect, skin perfect, and think about how many times we have experienced judgment towards ourselves from comparison.
Think about the last time you did something and felt so proud of yourself and felt excited about it and someone came along and told you that it was wrong and you're not "suppose" to do it like that or that it is not good enough. Was there really only one way to do it? OR Was it really just their way of doing it?
Think about all the idiosyncrasies that make you...YOU. Think about how much time you waste trying to achieve someone's concept of perfection. How much time do you waste trying to achieve YOUR concept of perfection?
Trying to be perfect all the time causes us to miss out on the journey of our lives. Learn to love and accept who you are and who others are. We are all different and we do things differently and yes, for something's there really is only one way of doing it but did you find that out by yourself or did you just assume?
"Love things as they are not as they could be or might be." ~ Flora Peterson
Let go of the concept of being perfect. Step outside of that concept and allow yourself to see how beautiful all the imperfections of everything, everyone, and yourself really are.
"Perfection...it's a joke; it's a form of a prison." Flora Peterson
If you allow yourself to embrace each thing about you and stop aiming for perfection you give yourself permission to be fully present in the moment. You get to experience life.
Flora gave us a challenge for this week: Start to find perfection in your imperfections. Look at all your "Flaws" and start to embrace them. See yourself for who you are- raw and unmasked and absolutely beautiful.
Thank you so much Flora for another fantastic and truly inspiring call,
