LATHE SAFETY ~ DON'T BE STUPID

While I was turning the step shafts for the crank bearings I was reminded of an incident from when I worked at Borg Warner. It was scary then and it’s even more now. I was just starting as a machinist at Borg Warner when an accident happened to one of the guys who worked with me. Don’t do this at home.

When I was at my old job I was the safety director. One of the most stressed points of my meetings was not to startle guys running machines. I was also the companies electrician. I would tell the guys don't walk up on me when I was in any electrical boxes or machines. One mistake and you're toast. Great video and reminder. 👍

A timely reminder to us all. I know we all laugh sometimes at the health and safety police but a machine shop accident is no laughing matter. I remember in shop classes a teacher had to wear a beard due to moisture getting into a casting crucible and the molten metal exploding into his face, the beard hid the scars. Thank you for caring about the rest of us.

Absolutely sound advice !!! I saw a 4ft long piece of 1" bar being turned with no steady, the operator had the lathe at 600 rpm, when he started up the 1" bar bent at 90 Degs and totally smashed everything when it rotated, by the time the lathe stopped everything was destroyed . Stay safe.

yes!! I HEAR you! When I was working out of the DuPont millwrights shop I always looked at what I was looking at. Too much stuff flying around not to. And the boulder hole was dangerous as a cocked gun with a hair trigger and an itchy finger. Maybe rocks or dirt sliding and rolling, machines weighing over 200k whizzing about and very few people looking anywhere other than straight ahead. You did NOT move until you got their FULL attention. And that wasn't enough sometimes. Glad I'm home!!!
