Leaving the chuck key in as a glove stand is the ultimate troll flex lmao

My dad always told me "machines don't care about you, they won't feel bad hurting or killing you" Gotta respect the power behind machines

Chuck key in the lathe… it should never leave your hand, people get tired and don’t check the machine properly and on switches can get bumped. Rule number one of running a lathe…

So happy to see how many people mentioning the Chuck key being left in the chuck.

The machinist who taught me would straight up sock me in the jaw if I ever left the chuck key in the chuck

Not a machinist but recently had my finger ripped off by a rotating tool, looking back I was wearing gloves that were inappropriate for the job and that certainly wasn't a good idea, but more than anything what cost me my nose picker was complacency when it came to safety. And you can't just learn your lesson and move on after a mistake like that, it sticks with you for the rest of your life. Value your safety above all else.

Chuck key got me, even if you check before turning anything on don't leave the key in there.

If someone said that on my first day of work I would quit that very moment.

I can still hear my shop teacher drilling home “REMOVER YOUR CHUCK KEY!” He was the remove it if you aren’t using it looking at it

“Make sure you don’t get owies”. A very important life lesson!

I grew up in a machine shop. No gloves at the machines. No long sleeve or flannel shirts at the machines, and we NEVER left a key in the chuck. The second someone forgets how dangerous those machines are, the machine will give a painful reminder.

My favorite quote that I’ve seen about shop machinery is a sticker on a lathe that said “this machine doesn’t have a brain, use your own”

I saw a poster once that said "Safety first because getting hurt, hurts"

My dad was a safety inspector in a factory and he always said all accidents are preventable. If someone said something like "these things happen" he would come unglued

I was taught to never let the chuck key out of your hand. But sometimes you had to. It felt so strange to leave it in that you always got it out.

My anxiety when I saw that chuck key in📈

Having someone else's chuck key come flying past my head in my career, and the concrete knocked out of the cinder block wall behind me... If your hand isn't on the chuck key pull it out. You can tell people not to hit their hand with a hammer all you want, but people still hit their hands with hammers.

It's like in construction. Be cognizant of your actions and reprucussions. If your nervous don't do it ask for assistance or tell someone else to do it there's always something else that needs done. Wear gloves when it's safe to do so for instance don't wear them in operations with a nail gun (glove just shoves foreign debris into wound). But wear your gloves when moving roughcut or tin (splinters and metal burrs are common).
