Finally! a good guide on Amiibos, lol. The characteristic traits get applied even if you don't use spirits on them, my Kirby was "Enthusiastic" and taunted like crazy (even when I was right beside him). My Fox was "Reckless" and jumped like crazy, I made them fight and Fox ended up getting an "Enthusiastic" trait, then after another fight with me he became "Thrill seeker" and taunts more, this feels like it can get as technical as Pokemon breeding lol

The maximum stat buff is actually 5000 across the board; however, it decreases by a certain amount depending on if you’ve given it abilities from support spirits or not, with the lowest being 4200 total. So theoretically you could have an amiibo with no skills but have 5000 stats in total versus an amiibo with 3 ability slots taken up with only 4200 in stats. Makes for more interesting choices when choosing how to build tour amiibo’s stats and abilities.

Something that NEEDS to be warned is that when you try to carry over amiibo data from Smash 4 there's a chance that it will corrupt the WHOLE amiibo. Happened to my Lucina when i tried to get her to transfer up and the Switch literally stopped reading her as an amiibo I had to use my hacked 3DS to repair it

I can vouch for the amibo developing unique AI. I spent a few 10 stock battles against my to cloud amibo doing nothing but practicing my parry and punish, and now my amibo is extremely grab happy and hold his smash attacks for strangely long lengths of time. Never seen one of the regular CPUs act this strangely.

Something everyone seems to forget to mention: When you use a primary spirit on your amiibo, you only change the attack, defense, type and personality. You will NOT transfer the special ability from the primary spirit to your amiibo fighter, nor the amount of support slots it would have (as you can feed your amiibo multiple primary spirits). Guides online might say "Give your Ganondorf amiibo a Chun-Li spirit to enhance it's physical attack" but that doesn't happen. And for some magical reason every one seems to forget to mention it.

Not all is lost though. Your amiibo gets three support slots no matter what primary spirits you pop into it.

But so you know, don't go hunting Sirius primary spirits for your collection of Link amiibos just because someone online told they're the best for Link.

Amiibo in smash are like robots that learn from battles. Kinda like the omnidroid from the incredibles. Every moment you spend fighting them only increases their knowledge on how to defeat you.
