I blame Athlean-X for this. Dude got me bent over rowing while keeping my shoulder blades back “for stability”.

I found NOT pressing my shoulder blades together for bench really reduced my elbow pain and I somehow got better chest involvement

Love these quick cue tips. The simple things make all the difference.

what about when do pullups, O good Sir?

I didn’t know this; I always just assumed that that was an axiom of weightlifting. Thank you!

Shoulder blades down before bending at the elbows for pull ups is also important. I used to not know that and occasionally my ulnar nerve would snap over my medial epicondyle. Not a good feeling.

I never had a bit of trouble with my shoulders until the "back and down" thing. I started doing it, convinced by the experts my normal way was leading me to future trouble. One of the dumber things ive done is to stop doing what works. Same with all the queues for heavy barbell lifts such as squats and deadlifts. I was fine until i started following advice instead of what felt right.

What about using this cue when bringing the bar down in an OHP? I find it helps provide a stable resting and launching point for the next rep.

Back and down may help for performance on the bench, but It still terrible advice. Scapula is supposed to move when the arm is moving. If you disattach the two you'll end up with scapula dyskenisis.
Secondly back and down jams the collarbone into the brachial plexus, resulting in thoracic outlet syndrome. For anyone wanting to optimize their shoulderblade performance, check out Evan Osar and/or Kjetil Larsen. Don't be fooled, there actually is a optimal way of doing this, all though you may need to relearn some things. Believe me it's worth it!

Yea I received a shoulder impingement issue doing incline with blade back and down. Took 3 weeks to recover. Never again

What's wrong with shrugging for overhead?
