Memento Mori | A Stoic Meditation on Death

Memento Mori, a phrase which means “Remember you must die.” On the surface, it appears to be a pessimistic concept. But on a deeper level, it can create profound meaning and allow yourself to prioritize what is important in your life. Ironically, by focusing on our own mortality we can begin to live life to its fullest potential. Before we begin with our guided visualization of Memento Mori, let’s start to anchor ourselves with our breath, our sensation, and our current environment. Find a comfortable position and, if possible, a quiet place to begin.

"To let your impertinence guide your thoughts and feelings" - it is a gift to be alive, yet we spend so much our days worrying about things whether things will happen when in reality we don't even know if we will be living in the near future. Understanding this and using it as a force of good, to live in the present and enjoy every single day can really help us combat anxiety and live more peacefully.

I don't feel a frantic urgency to make the most of life. After all we all will die and it will all be for naught. But the video makes me feel a calm sense that I definitely prefer, almost unemotionally, to make the best of life when I clearly recognize death.

Well done, this was the least upsetting one I've done so far. I don't know if it is however, just a symptom of me finally coming to grips with it tho, or if this is just beautifully done, and giving your death the respect it deserves.

Remember, that what we say and do lives on the influence we had on others, particularly the youth.
Long after we have left the world.
Did we set a good example?
Did we put the truth kindly to them?
Did we demonstrate virtue in our actions?
Did we show love and care for our own elders?
Did we demonstrate faith, make sure that we had a good confession and receive the last rights?
Remember, if with death your soul is lost, all is lost for you.
