The trick will work with heavy twine as well. Tie a loop in the the twine and then put a nail an inch or two away from the loop and start twisting the twine. When the twine is as tight as you need, slip the loop over the end of the nail to keep it from going slack, I use this to keep 2x4 and long lumber from warping as it ages. I can remove the tightened twine take out some wood and reuse the twine.

Get a large staple, put it at 90° to wire and start turning with plyers and screwdriver. Bend over points when tight.

Just an observation but there are a lot of commentors bitchin about "just a staple " in that post. Probably won't hold right?
Lemme tell ya folks ...anyone that can show you a smooth hack like that has enough brains to know a staple wouldn't hold . And just as genius as the trick he just used the staple to get the idea across. Am I right? Jeezus

Wire around the post, staple on far side just holds the wire from slipping down the post, it could never hold wire tension. Larger radius of wire bend means less loss of strength. Also probably reverse the nail so that head is opposite end, and use washer with inner diameter just larger than the nail head and wire diameter instead of the nut. cheaper and lighter to carry. It would lock in place better. The twisted end doesn't need the nail head since it's under tension. Nice idea though.

there are so many better ways. But using a staple like that is just doomed to failure ya gotta go around the post.

not for fence but "fixing" a big plant thats about to tilt over, was about to use the truckers hitch but had difficulties cause of the already present high tension.
