IIT prof's advice on making notes to maximize study output

In this video I discuss the biggest mistakes students make with regards to making notes, how they can overcome these mistakes, and use notes to make the best use of the time they spend studying.

I start off by discussing the problems students face in the absence of a note taking habit.

The biggest mistakes students make are:
1. Not making notes at all while reading books or attending lectures
2. Only underlining, highlighting or taking margin notes
3. Relying exclusively on notes from tuition teachers and coaching teachers
4. Borrowing notes from friends

I suggest some ways to overcome these mistakes.

12:16 It's the most most most important advice shared by the prof and it is something I have personally experienced which has helped me crack gate and land into IIT Kanpur

Thank you for the wonderful tips you have shared sir.I myself was a victim to these cosmetic notetaking techniques like bullet journalling, digital note taking etc. I now realised that the best way of taking notes is just a pen and paper. Thank you sir. I have a immense respect for you and the videos which you are making for young students.😃

I totally agreed with you sir I am an Engg grad and this approach is the most efficient one and applicable to all the study irrespective of the branch or stream .Thank You very much sir for illuminating on this important foundation step towards generic learning 🙏🏽.

Excellent content. Very crisp. I think my habit of notes making in class (in the late 90s) as well as while reading books has helped me retain most of the fundamental knowledge. It never left me. Besides, it improved my grasping power. As usual I am going to share this too with my UG engg class😊 Thank you professor.

Thanks for this lecture .. you are probably the first one to tell clearly about making own notes and study books .

Very good advice, even though I'm hardly a student now; But I struggle with learning, and even more retaining details of new topics (new for me). Note taking certainly helps a lot with retention, Now I see on reflection that when one refers to multiple books keeping all the information while accounting for nuance is impossible w/o taking notes. Thanks for the advice.

• self made notes from book>> underlining in book >>school/college notes

•make your own notes

•attend classes-->read book-->solve problems -->make notes of those things which were common in problems and what yoy were taught
They are GOLDEN NUGGETS

What I learnt

How do I verify my understanding of concept?
What's most efficient way of reading any book?
Reading only make me familiar with text but not in-depth understanding of concept.
Relying on others notes doesn't give me knowledge but I am only becoming dependent on borrowed knowledge of someone.
How to develop understanding of concept via practicing problems?

I enjoy Sciences and Mathematics, What you have articulated in the video, answers the question 'how I began enjoying Sciences and Mathematics."
Your point of "Making personalized notes, well adapted to your own style of thinking." not only promotes an efficient revision when we re-read the notes, But also forces us to ponder upon the Concepts, making us grasp them well. Which is what I have seen as a change in myself, From an average student, To a better scoring one.

What sir is saying is extremely crucial and true in my 10th i highlighted the important points and read it again and again though I was having a vague thought that my concepts are getting better what actually was happening that I was just mugging up things with a certain level of understanding. Sir 2nd point happened to me during my 11th when I was solving cengage maths regourslessly i developed many new concepts on question solving that was mine and mine alone but since I hadn't note it down it all vanishes.
But I will make sure sir that I don't repeat my mistakes.
Because someone has well said that "if you made a mistake and don't correct it then it's a mistake".

Respected sir,
I completely agree with your statement regarding undergraduate students why the students were unable to make use of full potentials in the tier-3 college, where the students were just mugging before exams from materials and readymade notes completely do not know the jest from the subject.

Helpful video! Most of the things you said here, I discovered via hit and trial (meaning I've reasonably suffered for most of my academic life due to bad notes). As you said, its important to make notes even when solving science questions. I also never feel satisfied using someone else's notes.

My personal addition here: your tip about noting down little concepts applies not just to science, but to humanities too. Self studying humanities since few months now, I'll elaborate it for the (minority) humanities students here: add some analytical notes too. So, make your normal notes writing down facts, but also write down how the specific fact affects other elements. Eg. in History, analyzing long term impact of events help you understand and remember better. In Geography. analyzing the impacts of geographical info on economy or lifestyle helps better remember things. Noting these down help in faster understanding and recall. In the past few months, my (mis)conception that Humanities is "rote memorization" subject has been broken.

One final thing - and this is something I falter at till date - REVISION! Notes are useless if not revised. I need to improve upon my revision schedules :)

@Prof_JC Sir I would like to request you to make a video on the best books to follow for actually learning PCM during JEE preparation. If not possible for Chemistry and Maths, your suggestions on Physics book would really help us.
