Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signs bill against squatters

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new bill on Wednesday in Orlando that will allow squatters to be immediately evicted.⁠

Before this bill, squatters were considered tenants and there would need to be a process to evict them. But now, this bill strips squatters of those rights.⁠

In addition, the bill, which goes into effect on July 1, 2024, creates strict criminal penalties for anyone who presents a false document purporting to be valid lease agreement, deed, or other instrument conveying real property rights.⁠

I can't understand how squatters ever got "rights" to begin with. They trespassed, broke into a residence they did not own or rent, and were able to live with impunity. They were able to sell or trash appliances. How their rights took priority over the actual home owner is so over my head.

When I lived in New Mexico, I rented my home, and they paid the rent when they wanted and in small amounts. Sheriff's had them out in 24 hours. My home was damaged, and eight people moved in instead of four. It was rented out by a property management I hired. All states should protect owners of property, not the crooks that take over your property.
