FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Bill Condon brings Tom Eyen's Tony award-winning Broadway musical to the big screen in a tale of dreams, stardom, and the high cost of success in the cutthroat recording industry. The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Subsequently molded into an unstoppable hit machine by Taylor and propelled into the spotlight as "the Dreams," the girls quickly find their bid for the big time taking priority over personal friendship as Taylor edges out the ultra-talented Effie so that the more beautiful Deena can become the face of the group. Now, as the crossover act continues to dominate the airwaves, the small-town girls with big-city dreams slowly begin to realize that the true cost of fame may be higher than any of them ever anticipated.

Anybody realize that the lyrics to this song explain the entire movie?

The entire 1st verse = Effie's problems with Curtis, how he put her in the background, cheated on her, broke her heart
"Move Right Out Of My Life" = everyone's feelings towards Curtis in the end because he was so controlling
"The way you lead me around" = Curtis controlled everyone here and told all of them that they have to do anything he says
"...Titanic ...Going Down" = Effie's career basically went down like the titanic after he kicked her out the group
"Stepping On My Style" = Curtis basically forced Jimmy to change his style to appeal to white people and the pop charts and took away all his soul
"I wanna breathe for a while" = Curtis was basically down Deena's throat about the music she made and the movie she was in and she wanted to do something on her own (the other movie)

I could be reaching but it does seem kind of weird they'd sing a song about a manipulative controlling guy in the beginning of a movie about one

Damn Jennifer can sing! Every time she opens her mouth, I get taken aback like it's the first time I'm hearing her sing. Wow!

Very accurate.  Flo Ballard was the original lead of the Supremes and had a powerful voice that captivated everyone.  Gordy decided Diana had the lighter more commercial 'pop' sound so she was made lead singer.

I don’t think Beyoncé is a gifted actor in films (she definitely is on the stage performing her music) but I have to say when she plays shy Deena in the first half, she kills it. Probably because her natural disposition is shy. But it’s the most believable role I’ve seen her play in a film.
