"what are you studying Italian for" they say this with every language they don't deem important or necessary for the person learning and I honestly hate that mindset so much. Sometimes you can learn a language for fun, or like you said for escapism. Languages doesn't need to only be learned as a skillset for some job or anything like that. Its always good to know more languages in ur life, it helps you connect with more people, the cultures, create relationships, appreciate the world more.. the list is endless. language learning doesn't need to be a "need" only but a "want" as well if that makes sense. thank you for this wonderful video!!

Italian is one of the most beautiful languages in the world. Besides, Italy is an amazing country with an amazing culture and the only way to find out all secret they hide is to master the language first. Great video, Olly! Great story as usual. 😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This video spoke to me, because I struggle with whether to continue with Italian or switch to something more "practical" or "major", like Spanish or Mandarin. Language learning takes a lot of time. And it's a zero sum game - every hour spent on one language is not spent on another. But in spite of their "importance", those languages are less motivating to me and hard to stay at. Italian, on the other hand, is a pure joy, and I stay with it out of love. Its relative ease and sheer beauty make it a pleasure, not like work at all. Add to that the art, the food, the architecture, streetscapes and scenery, the music (my original motivation), and what's not to love?

But I also have some rational arguments in its favour:

1. Its similarity to more other romance languages is arguably closer than other romance languages. Even to more divergent ones like Romanian & French. And closest to Latin. So it's kind of an indirect way to "study" them a bit at the same time, incl. Spanish - if you're fluent in one, you can understand a good bit of the other.

2. For 1500 years, Italy was a (or the?) center of ideas and evolution of W. European culture. It gave us the Roman Empire, the Latin language - Europe's lingua franca and main written language much of that period, and the Renaissance. It has more UNESCO heritage sites than any other country and a huge portion of the world's art treasures. It's literally the language of music. It has cultural influence way disproportionate to its size. That's why it's such a tourist mecca.

3. Being relatively easy makes it a good investment of time, because a given amount of study yields more results than with more difficult languages.

4. Studying Latin (or French) deepens your understanding of English because of the Latin roots of so much English. But Latin is really difficult and definitely not fun for me. Italian is as close as I'm going to get, and serves the same purpose.

5. Italy is high on my travel list.

Really enjoyed this video. Thank you, Olly!

I found your youtube channel this weekend and I am so inspired. I tried learning French 10 years ago but I realized that the teacher had the wrong approach. We focused on grammar all the time and talking about grammar and verbs. After a month without understanding anything I gave up.
I am now inspired to use your method.
Thanks for your videos, they are a blessing 🙏🏻 🤩

Oh. I'm learning Italian, I might keep your video somewhere for when I lack motivation. And I'm a French native speaker who learned Spanish, so in my particular situation, Italian is very easy. I even speak Spanish without thinking in Italian class, sometimes.

PERFECT timing! I'm just at a stage of deciding whether to pick Italian up again or go for another language. Grazie mille, Olly! 😊

I'm actually at level A2 with learning Italian. I ordered your beginner short story books but they are still a bit advanced for me. I'll attempt to read them in 3 to 6 months. I'll have one year of immersion and hopefully, I'll be able to read your books. My question is did you ever consider writing short stories for A2 beginners? You have such great tips in regards to learning Italian.
