Hi Sam!! It was great meeting you back when u filmed this video at Channel Islands! We’re currently activated right now for fire season here in California. Thanks for making a video about our mission, it’s definitely awesome seeing all our work come together in one video.

Fun fact there was some official concept designs for A10s to be used against wildfires

Speaking of C-130s... Check out the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron.
They operate the WC-130J Weatherbird and they straight up fly into hurricanes.
There's a not a whole of documentaries or videos about them.

My unit! 146 AW. All four MAFFS units are currently activated for this mission and the planes in this video are fighting the fires in California right now! Awesome video, thanks for making it!

air force firefighters are not required, but ‘heavily encouraged’ at certain bases to get wildland certifications as well in order to protect the base perimeter. we call it getting your ‘red card’

The fact that you can see how much the aircraft move when it activates the MAFFS on the ground really shows how strong the pressure is

I spent 16 years as a Crew Chief at the 146AW, the MAFFS mission was our top priority. When I got to the unit we were doing the MAFFS mission with the original MAFFS units that dispensed the fire retardant out of dual nozzles from the cargo ramp & door. We had under power 1960's E-model C-130s that we had to remove weight (external fuel tanks, all non essential equipment in the cargo compartment, etc.) to gain performance for the low speed & low level flying that the MAFFS mission requires. By 2008 we full transitioned to new C-130J models and the MAFFS 2 units you see in the video.

I spent 10 years as the PAO for the 153rd AW WY ANG and this was one of my favorite missions to cover. Thanks for this great look at the mission.

What a great group commander. I love how she gave the maintainers a bunch of credit normally it’s just a pilot to get all the credit but in this video, the loaders get a bunch of credit thank you to all you to all you loaders and crew chief that move everything around the world.

Great video, Sam! This is definitely a mission that most folks don't know about. Happy to see these crews highlighted for the important work they do to protect lives and property.

My hubby (retired) was at the 146AW and ran MAFFS in CA for 13 years. They are brave and lifesavers!! Thank you MAFFS!! Nice video!

As a wildlife firefighter entering my first season, I can't wait to be on the fire line with such cool pieces of machinery. These are one of the reasons I wanted to become a firefighter since I can remember.
