5 Times The Simpsons Predicted The Future
Number 5: Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl Performance
Pop culture is big in The Simpsons. They love to add in icons and events to make the show feel real and of its time. In 2012, The Simpsons aired an episode that had Lady Gaga performing at the Super Bowl. Knowing Lady Gaga, they showed her performing an extravagant and over-the-top show. In 2017, Gaga came to perform at the Super Bowl half time show, and many fans instantly saw the similarities between this performance and the episode that aired five years prior. But then again, isn’t it a bit easy to predict what Lady Gaga will do next?
Number 4: Rigged Voting Machines
Ah dirty politics, they make such great punchlines. But what happens when a joke in The Simpsons becomes reality? Not so funny anymore! In one episode, Homer is at a voting machine attempting to vote for Barack Obama. The machine logs his vote as one for John McCain, and when he tries again and again, the same thing happens. In reality, these rigged machines turned into a nightmare. During the campaign of Obama and Romney, a few voting machines had to be taken down after votes for Obama kept changing to votes for Romney. Maybe next time The Simpsons can predict a hopeful future!
Number 3: President Trump
Politics aren’t something you usually think of when you watch cartoons. But The Simpsons isn’t just your average cartoon! In one episode, they scarily seem to predict the future of American Presidency when they showed Donald Trump being elected President! The year was 2000, way before anyone would’ve thought of Trump even running for office. The episode is based in the future when Lisa becomes president. She is seen having to clean up after the previous president, Donald Trump. Without getting into the dirty details, the Trump presidency can be seen as something… troubling. The nation was split, and The Simpsons saw that way back when this episode aired. The episode saw Trump destroying the country with his poor choices and big ego. Yes, they even poked fun at his hair.
Number 2: Disney Buys Everything
Today, Disney is a huge company. They aren’t just Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, they own Marvel and 20th Century Fox, just to name a few. In one episode of The Simpsons aired nearly two decades before the acquisition, a shot of a 20th Century Fox logo is seen. Under it in fine print it says A Division of Walt Disney Co! Scary!
Number 1: Autocorrect
Being one of the longest running shows, The Simpsons has lived through technological advances and incredible gadgets. Many of what we have now can even be seen as a joke or gag on the show years before they ever hit the market! In 1994, though, The Simpsons had an episode that featured the cons of autocorrect. Now, autocorrect can be ducking annoying at times, and The Simpsons somehow saw that way before smartphones were ever invented! In the episode, a character pulls out an electronic memo pad and writes “Beat up Martin”. The writing is then translated from handwriting into text and corrects to “Eat up Martha”. This episode even inspired Apple to later focus on making sure their keyboards and autocorrect would be stable enough to prevent any Marthas from being eaten up!
